Art
November 12 & 13 - Auditions
Director - Nancy Wolford
Casting Breakdown:

Marc - a very good friend of Serge’s, but not necessarily a modern art fan. Marc is somewhere in his 40s, an aeronautical engineer, a practical, down to earth man. He is not married but has been seeing the unseen Paula for some time.

Serge - a 40-something dermatologist who has had his eye on this white-on-white painting by the modernist Antrios for some time now. He does not appreciate Marc’s disapproval of his choice, and feels that Marc sneers at its abstract style, and, by extension, at himself.

Yvan - just a bit younger than Marc and Serge, Yvan is still “finding himself”: his new job with his fiancee’s family is in stationery, though he’s been working in textiles. And the wedding is putting Yvan on edge: if his mother comes, his father’s second wife won’t; if she doesn’t come she’ll never speak to Yvan again; his fiancée’s mother doesn’t want the second wife there, etc., etc.. Yvan is generally a bit edgy, and this tension between Marc and Serge is just the last straw.

Rabbit Hole
November 19 & 20
Director - Nancy Speno
Casting Breakdown:

Becca (late thirties/early forties) has shut down emotionally as a result of her child’s unfortunate death. She appears to handle normal, daily activities, as any strong career woman would in her situation, but, in reality, has one foot in the moment and one in quiet madness, which makes this a plumb acting role for the actress who can avoid histrionics and play it naturally.

Howie (late thirties/early forties) is visibly more emotional than his wife, Becca, in coping with the loss of their son. Howie is NOT a weakling, however, and shouldn’t be played as such.

Nat (sixties) has the levity and poignancy that you would expect from a mom wanting to comfort her daughter and make everything all right. A lovely role for a veteran actress.

Izzy (early thirties) is dizzily hyper, but not ditsy. She’s always been Becca’s less responsible kid sister, but the actress playing her should exhibit character growth (need to show some range, here) with a depth of understanding and readiness to accept responsibility.

Jason (17-year-old) is a teenager exhibiting the usual goofiness, awkwardness, and a gentle cockiness you’d expect from an intelligent being of this age.

Seussical, The Musical
January 7 & 8 - Auditions
Director - Michael Biggs
Casting Breakdown:

GENERAL GENGUS KHAN SCHMITZ The General is bursting with pride at the military academy he runs, and the boys he turns out. He is not sadistic, mean or abusive. He is proud! He is doing the right thing for his boys! He is making the world a better place! This makes him a comic character, because it's clear he's so misguided. Please don't play him as a villain or bully. By the end of the show, he's discovered that making war may not be the right thing to do, and that adults can learn from children as well.

GERTRUDE McFUZZ Very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect. Gertrude changes during the show from a vain, neurotic, nervous and shy bird into one with the power to protect and care for a baby elephant bird and commit herself to Horton. In other words, she stops worrying about her looks and grows up.

HORTON THE ELEPHANT Gentle, rotund and appealing. Think of him as a big-hearted blue collar guy who is steadfast and responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. He is very un-self-conscious. Horton's view of the world never changes--he believes in its goodness. But by the end of the show, without even realizing it, he is ready to become a parent.

JOJO Jojo is a "Thinker"--a smart child with a wild imagination. He can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose 'Thinks' get him into constant trouble. By the end of the show, he learns what it means to be a responsible member of his world, using the power and possibilities of his own 'Thinks.'

MAYZIE LA BIRD Self-centered, selfish and vain, Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can (especially Horton) into doing what she wants. But Mayzie isn't all bad. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of generosity--she realizes she isn't the kind of person who'd be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can do for the egg.

MR. AND MRS. MAYOR Parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake.

SOUR KANGAROO She isn't really sour at all. She's just got a lot of attitude. She's loud, brassy and a lot of fun.

THE BIRD GIRLS The popular girls in any school--a clique of pretty, self-centered "back up birds" who do whatever Mayzie does.

THE CAT IN THE HAT The essence of mischief, fun and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping JoJo to discover the power of his imagination as they create the story for the show together. Look for a physically adept actor (male or female) to play the Cat, one who will be able to play many comic cameos (Dr. Dake, helicopter reporter, TV interviewer, auctioneer, Mr. McGurkus, etc.) and is comfortable improvising with an audience. Can be played by both male and female actors

THE WICKERSHAM BROTHERS These are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense. They enjoy hanging around with one another, making music together on the street corner, and playing off one another. Encourage each of your actors to find his own Wickersham persona.

Ensemble: Who's, Cadets, Hunches, circus animals, interviewees, etc.  VERY LARGE ENSEMBLE.

passionate.

M'Lynn Eatenton ‐ to play 40 to 50’s ‐ Shelby's mother. Always knows what’s best, strong, stubborn, the heart of the piece.

Ouiser (pronounced Weezer) Boudreaux ‐ to play55 to late 60’s ‐ Wealthy curmudgeon. Tough, Eccentric character.

Avenue Q
February 11 & 12 - Auditions
Director - Kristen Fernandez
Casting Breakdown:

Princeton, a recently graduated English major.

Kate Monster, a lovelorn kindergarten teaching assistant who wishes to create a school for monsters; Parody of Elmo.

Rod, a Republican investment banker who is secretly gay. Parody of Bert.

Nicky, Rod's roommate, a messy slacker; Parody of Ernie.

Lucy the Slut, a nightclub singer who is as slutty as her name suggests; "Lucy's like what would have happened if Prairie Dawn on Sesame Street had grown up and gone bad."

Gary Coleman, the former star of Diff'rent Strokes, is the building superintendent of Avenue Q; a non-puppet character played by a female on Broadway, but a male in the West End

Brian, a down-on-his-luck Jewish 32-year-old who has trouble keeping steady employment and dreams of being a stand-up comedian. Engaged to Christmas Eve. A non-puppet character.

Christmas Eve, a Japanese immigrant and Brian's fiancée. She is a therapist who has no clients; a non-puppet character.

The Bad Idea Bears, the two adorable and sinister bears who can convince anyone to do something bad in the most adorable way.

Trekkie Monster, who spends most of his time on the internet looking at porn; Parody of Cookie Monster.

Mrs. Thistletwat ('Lavinia'), a Kindergarten teacher with Kate as her assistant.

The Newcomer, the young man resembling Princeton that comes to Avenue Q planning to move into the vacant apartment.

Ricky, the new boyfriend that Nicky has found for Rod via the internet. He looks an awful lot like Nicky, hence the name similarities. When Nicky presents him to Rod, he says "Oh, I think I know your type."

Nunsense
March 18 & 19 - Auditions
Director - Jeanine Henry
Casting Breakdown:

Sister Mary Regina (Mother Superior): The head of the convent, she is respected greatly by the sisters. While she is strict, she has a hard time keeping the craziness of the convent at bay. She keeps her guard up in front of the nuns, but has an extroverted side. Part requires some very physical humor. Voice part: mezzo/belter.

Sister Mary Hubert: Hubert is in charge of novices, but fancies herself a Mother Superior and is constant competition with Mary Regina. She exudes maternal wisdom to novices, but also likes to let loose. Voice part: Mezzo/belter.

Sister Robert Anne: Once a child delinquent herself, this rough tough nun is a jokester and constantly challenging authority. She speaks with a thick Brooklyn accent and constantly displays her lack of refinement. Vocal part: Mezzo/belter

Sister Mary Amnesia: As the name suggests, she has lost her memory and does not know who she is except that she is a nun. She is spacey and incoherent, often slipping into displays inappropriate for a nun. Must be able to sing in classical and country styles. Vocal part: Soprano AND belter

Sister Mary Leo: Leo is the novice nun, still learning the way and coming to terms with her decision to give up "civilian" life. She is a ballerina and displays her talents through much of the show. She is also easily swayed to join in mischief. Vocal part: mezzo/belter
